Chapter Twenty-Four

Trevor

Well, so much for not having any plans today.

At breakfast, Alex reminds me that we were renting jet skis today and taking them out in the Currituck Sound. Usually the things rent by the hour, but due to my brother’s disposable income—he’s paying for this venture—we have them for the entire day.

I’m a little surprised Sara hadn’t mentioned anything about the rentals when we spoke last night. Then again, she probably doesn’t have a handle on the everyday reservations, and she had a lot on her mind yesterday.

I’m bummed I have to cancel on her, but I promised my family I’d do this with them today and it is our vacation after all. A time for us all to relax and enjoy downtime as a family.

I decide against calling Sara and plan to speak to her when we get to her place. I just hope she’s there.

When we get there, we follow similar protocol as the last time—two at a time. Alex and I go in first and approach the counter. He asks to check in, and I ask for Sara.

“Let me check if she’s in,” the girl working the desk says, looking at me curiously. I think this is her friend, Victoria, but she’s not wearing a nametag so I can’t be sure. She disappears in the back for a minute before returning with a knowing grin. “She says you can go on back.”

“I’ll be out in a minute,” I tell Alex, and he nods, still focusing on the rental paperwork.

I walk around the counter and down the short hallway to her office. The door is open, and I lean on the frame, just watching her for a moment. Her hair is in a messy bun on top of her head and she’s got these black framed, librarian glasses on that make her look sexier, if that’s even possible. She’s pouring over paperwork, invoices by the looks of it.

I knock on the open door, and she jumps in her seat, grabbing her chest.

“You scared the hell outta me,” she scolds.

I grin in response. “Sorry.”

She narrows her eyes at me. “You don’t sound very sorry. I thought you were gonna call. What are you doing here?”

She doesn’t sound pissed that I’m here. I take that as a good sign and step inside her office, taking a seat in the guest chair. “I forgot today was Jet Ski day.”

She raises a brow in question. “Jet Ski day?”

“Alex,” I tell her, as if that explains everything. She nods in acceptance, so I guess it does. I like how she already understands my brother’s quirks. “He rented some for the entire day. Family fun and all that. I completely forgot about it until he told me this morning.”

She frowns and I feel bad for breaking our plans. Or rather for breaking our plans to make plans.

“Do you want to come with us?” I blurt.

She raises her eyebrows. “For family fun?” she asks.

I nod vigorously, already imagining her sitting behind me on the
